If your skin goes red after cleansing, stings when you try a new product, or stays angry for days after a breakout, centella is the ingredient you want to know about. In Korean skincare it is everywhere, usually labelled "cica", and for good reason.
Centella asiatica is a plant that grows in wet, tropical regions, including parts of South Asia, where it has a long history in traditional medicine for wound healing. The modern skincare interest comes from four active compounds it contains: madecassoside, asiaticoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.
Together they help to:
The COSRX Centella Water Alcohol-Free Toner is a light, alcohol-free first layer after cleansing. It is a good way to add centella without changing the rest of your routine.
The SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Asiatica Ampoule is the classic. It is made almost entirely of centella extract, with very little else to react to, which makes it one of the safest choices for reactive skin. If your skin is also dehydrated, the SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica First Ampoule adds hyaluronic acid for more moisture.
For dullness as well as redness, the Beauty of Joseon Light On Serum (Centella + Vitamin C) combines both. It is a gentle way into vitamin C for skin that cannot handle strong formulas.
The Medicube Exosome Cica Cream seals everything in with a soothing cream layer. On very oily skin, a centella ampoule followed by a light gel moisturiser may be enough.
Sensitive skin and sunscreen often do not get along. Centella-based options are designed to be gentler: the SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF50+ is light and watery, and the Some By Mi Truecica Aqua Calming Suncream is another calming choice. Our sunscreen guide explains what to look for.
Morning: gentle cleanser β centella toner β centella ampoule β light moisturiser β sunscreen.
Night: gentle cleanser β centella ampoule β your treatment, if any β cica cream.
When skin is badly irritated, stop everything else for a week. Use only cleanser, centella and moisturiser, plus sunscreen in the morning. Then add your other products back one at a time.
Centella pairs very well with acne actives. Apply your salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide treatment, then centella on top, or alternate nights. It will not stop the treatment working, but it makes it far easier to keep using. Our acne-prone skin routine shows where each step goes.
It will not fade deep pigmentation, shrink pores or replace sunscreen. It is a calming, repairing ingredient: it makes skin healthier and more tolerant so that other products can do their job. For oil and pores, see our niacinamide guide.
